Campagnolo · ref 8-speed Ergopower, 1992–1997 type · 1992–1997
Part of the Campagnolo Chorus 8-speed groupset.
Ergopower is Campagnolo's combined brake and shift lever for drop bars. Velobase records the first Ergo shifter in the 1992 catalogue and lists that 8-speed lever (EC-02RE CG) as working with the Record, Chorus and Athena groups of the time, so a listing titled Chorus may be the same lever as one titled Record. The 1992 version has a stubby lower lever and a spring-loaded quick-release button; the shape was refined after that first year. The 8-speed levers run from 1992 to about 1997. Inside, the shift cam sets the number of speeds, and the small 'G' springs are wear parts. Campy Only, quoting Branford Bike, recommends replacing both G springs and the right lever's thumb-button spring at around 10,000 miles, and whenever the cam is changed. The same source says cams fit all Ergo levers from 1992 to 2001, so an 8-speed lever can be converted to 9-speed, but a 1992–1997 lever cannot be converted to 10-speed.
Buying guide
About 86 listings turn up for 8-speed Ergopower, and most pairs run $120–270 delivered; several pairs sit at $105–125, though $18–34 of that is shipping. The 1992–97 8-speed lever was shared across Record, Chorus and Athena, so a Record-titled pair can be the same lever as a Chorus one. Prioritise a complete left and right pair with intact hoods and bar clamps that the seller says shifts through every gear and holds each position. Budget for a G-spring service on any lever this old unless one is documented, and confirm 8-speed if you are keeping an 8-speed drivetrain.
