Mavic is a French component maker founded in Lyon around 1889 by Charles Idoux and Lucien Chanel; the name is an acronym for Manufacture d'Articles Vélocipédiques Idoux et Chanel. It is above all a rim maker. Mavic's own timeline credits it with the Dura rim with integrated eyelets in 1934, the start of neutral technical support at races in 1973, and anodized rims in 1975. Classic Rendezvous adds the grey Paris-Roubaix rim of 1975, described as the first hard-anodized rim, the narrow Module E rim of the same year, and the first Mavic derailleur in 1978; by 1979 Mavic was selling its own complete group. For vintage road buyers the relevant pieces are mostly rims: the GP4 tubular from the 1970s, the MA40 clincher from the mid-1980s to 1999, and the Open Pro clincher, a name Mavic still uses today for a tubeless rim. Mavic printed the model name on its rim labels, often with production notes such as Hard Anodised or Stainless Steel Eyelet, so a rim can usually be identified from clear photos.
