Mavic · ref MA40 · Mid-1980s – 1999
The MA40 is a Mavic aluminum clincher rim made from roughly the mid-1980s to 1999, in both 700c (622 mm) and 27-inch (630 mm) sizes. Velobase records it with double stainless-steel eyelets, Presta valve drilling, 32-, 36- and 40-hole drillings, and two finishes: hard-anodized grey and silver-anodized. The label reads 'MA40' with 'Made in France' and 'Stainless Steel Eyelet', and hard-anodized rims add 'Hard Anodised Treatment'; Velobase also notes that late-production rims have a changed logo. The effective rim diameter (ERD) listed for the 700c rim is 613 mm. The 27-inch version is the useful one for buyers rebuilding 1970s and early-1980s road bikes that came on 27-inch wheels: it keeps the original tire size and brake pad position, whereas a 700c rim's braking surface sits about 4 mm closer to the hub and may be out of reach of the original brakes. As a hard-anodized clincher it is a practical, everyday rim rather than a collector piece, and the grey finish shows brake wear clearly, which makes condition easy to judge from photos.
Buying guide
About 65 listings turn up, and they mix single rims and pairs: single 700c rims run about $70–90 delivered here and listings of rims (plural) mostly $140–300. The MA40 was made in both 700c (622 mm) and 27-inch (630 mm), and the two don't swap without longer-reach brakes, so match the size to your frame; titles that say 28" alongside 700c or 622 are 700c. Match the hole count to your hub (32, 36 or 40), and pass on rims with the grey anodizing worn off the brake track or a concave sidewall. Treat 'NOS' claims as unproven until you see packaging photos.
