Groupset · 1984–1996
Dura-Ace 7400 is the group that brought Shimano's SIS indexed shifting in 1984. It changed a lot over its life, so the year of a part matters. Sheldon Brown's Dura-Ace timeline gives the main steps: 6-speed SIS in 1984, 7-speed Uniglide with the 7401 revision in 1986, and 8-speed with the 7402 revision (1989 in Sheldon Brown's timeline; Disraeli Gears dates the RD-7402 to 1988). 8-speed Hyperglide and Superglide chainrings arrived in 1990, and STI brake-shift levers and dual-pivot brakes in 1991. A UN-91 cartridge bottom bracket followed in 1993 and FC-7410 low-profile cranks in 1994, and the 9-speed 7700 group replaced it all in 1997. The quirk to know: until 7700, Dura-Ace rear derailleurs needed less cable per click than other Shimano road parts. Dura-Ace levers and derailleurs only index with each other, and Dura-Ace Uniglide freehubs used their own top-cog thread. Match parts by generation, using the stamped model numbers and the two-letter date codes.
