Shimano · ref Dura-Ace 7400 SIS down-tube levers (6-, 7- or 8-speed) · 1984–1996
Part of the Shimano Dura-Ace 7400 groupset.
Dura-Ace 7400 launched Shimano's SIS indexed shifting in 1984. Velobase lists Dura-Ace SIS as running from 6 to 8 speeds, and Disraeli Gears calls it the first indexing system that really worked on modern multi-sprocket drivetrains. The down-tube levers came in three generations: 6-speed with the original 7400 group in 1984, 7-speed with the 7401 revision in 1986, and 8-speed with the 7402 revision. Sheldon Brown's Dura-Ace timeline puts 8-speed at 1989; Disraeli Gears dates the 8-speed derailleur to 1988. STI brake-shift levers took over at the top of the range from 1991. The catch for buyers is compatibility. Sheldon Brown explains that Dura-Ace derailleurs before 1997 moved less per click than other Shimano road derailleurs. These levers only index correctly with a Dura-Ace 7400-era rear derailleur and a Dura-Ace cassette of the same speed count. Paired with a 600 or 105 rear derailleur, the clicks will not line up. Buy the levers, rear derailleur and freehub as a matched set, or check that each part's speed count and Dura-Ace stamp agree.
Buying guide
About 27 listings turn up, split between the 6-speed SL-7400, the 7-speed SL-7401 and the 8-speed SL-7402; most pairs run $80–200 delivered, with the SL-7401 the most common and cheapest. Buy the speed count that matches your freehub and Dura-Ace 7400-era rear derailleur, because these levers don't index correctly with a 600 or 105 derailleur. Check whether the listing is braze-on or needs a clamp band, and that both levers are included, since some titles say "shifter" or "lever" singular. NOS pairs at $200–300 delivered are collector pricing.
