The RD-6400 is the rear derailleur from Shimano's 6400-series 600 group, the second tier below Dura-Ace. Wikipedia's list of Shimano groups dates 6400 to 1988 as a 7-speed SIS group nicknamed "Tricolor", followed in 1992 by the 8-speed 6402 group with STI levers. On naming, Sheldon Brown says the Ultegra name was added as a suffix to 600 in the early 1990s, and that "600" was dropped in the 1998 model year when Ultegra went 9-speed. That is why sellers use "600", "600 Tricolor" and "600 Ultegra" for overlapping parts. What matters for compatibility is that this is not a Dura-Ace part. Sheldon Brown explains that before 1997, Dura-Ace derailleurs needed less cable per shift than other Shimano road derailleurs. A 600 rear derailleur therefore indexes with 600, 105 and other non-Dura-Ace SIS levers of the same speed count, but not with Dura-Ace 7400 levers. For a restoration, match the derailleur to the levers and the cassette that came on the bike.
