Shimano · ref FD-6400
Part of the Shimano 600 / Ultegra 6400 groupset.
The FD-6400 is the front derailleur from Shimano's 6400-series 600 group of the late 1980s and early 1990s. Wikipedia's list of Shimano groups dates 6400 to 1988 as a 7-speed SIS group nicknamed "Tricolor", with the 8-speed 6402 STI version following in 1992. Sheldon Brown adds that the Ultegra name was added to 600 in the early 1990s, so the same family of front derailleurs shows up in listings as "600", "600 Tricolor" and "600 Ultegra". It is a straightforward part for a two-ring road crank. Most Shimano road double cranks of the era use a 130 mm bolt circle, which this derailleur was designed around. Clamp-on and braze-on versions exist, and buyers usually care most about getting the right mount and clamp size, a straight cage and a strong return spring. Match the stamp and finish to the rest of your group if originality matters.
Buying guide
About 106 listings turn up, and most used FD-6400s cost $20–40 delivered. The first thing to check is the mount: there are braze-on and clamp-on versions, and the clamp-ons here are 28.6 mm, so measure your seat tube. Sight down the cage for twist and check the return spring is strong. Pass on 'NOS' listings at two to five times the used price unless the box is shown.
