Shimano · ref FC-6400
Part of the Shimano 600 / Ultegra 6400 groupset.
The FC-6400 is the double crankset from Shimano's 6400-series 600 group, one step below Dura-Ace. Wikipedia's list of Shimano groups dates 6400 to 1988 as a 7-speed SIS group nicknamed "Tricolor", with the 8-speed 6402 STI version following in 1992. Sheldon Brown notes that the Ultegra name was added to 600 in the early 1990s. Like most Shimano road doubles of the period, it uses a 130 mm chainring bolt circle, which Velobase lists as the common Shimano road size, so replacement rings are not hard to find. Sheldon Brown's spindle-length table lists 600 Ultegra 6400 doubles at 113 mm, with 115 mm also given, and notes the group ran from 6- and 7-speed in 1990 to 8-speed through 1996. Shimano cranks generally use the JIS square taper, so a 6400 crank sits correctly on a JIS spindle of the right length. Fitting it to an ISO (Campagnolo-style) spindle puts the arm about 4.5 mm farther in than intended.
Buying guide
About 127 listings turn up, and a complete FC-6400 double with rings mostly runs $50–80 delivered. Check whether chainrings are included, because several cheap listings are titled as crank arms only, and note the ring sizes (53/39 and 53/42 both appear) and arm length (170, 172.5 or 175 mm). The crank uses 130 mm BCD rings and a JIS square-taper bottom bracket of about 113 mm, so budget for one if it isn't included. Look for cracks around the pedal eyes and spider, and treat 'NOS' claims at $240–260 as unproven until you see box photos.
