Groupset · 1981–early 1990s
Superbe Pro was SunTour's top road racing group. Sheldon Brown's SunTour history dates the group to 1981, although Disraeli Gears documents a Superbe Pro rear derailleur as early as late 1977. Early Superbe Pro was a friction group with light, finely made derailleurs. In the second half of the 1980s it became SunTour's showcase for AccuShift indexing, which Disraeli Gears says ran well behind Shimano's SIS. SunTour's 1990 catalog shows the later group: an AccuShift Plus rear derailleur, a choice of non-indexed and indexed down-tube levers, short-reach recessed single-pivot calipers, freewheel hubs in 126 or 130 mm, and the CW-SB10 crank on a 130 mm bolt circle with SunTour's own "Superbe" taper. The same catalog names Super Confex, Helvetia-La Suisse and Stuttgart as pro teams on the group. SunTour stopped making components in 1995, so parts and spares are all secondhand now. Indexed Superbe Pro only indexes with SunTour levers and freewheels.
