SunTour · ref Superbe Pro (3100, 5200, later RD-SB00-SSB) · late 1970s–early 1990s
Part of the SunTour Superbe Pro groupset.
"Superbe Pro" covers several different rear derailleurs, so identify the version before you bid. Disraeli Gears documents a Superbe Pro (3100) from late 1977: a lighter version of the Superbe with aluminium pivot and pulley bolts, a 23-tooth largest sprocket and a weight of 170 grams. A 1981 revision added sealed-bearing pulleys. Sheldon Brown's SunTour history dates the Superbe Pro group to 1981. The 5200 of the mid-1980s kept removable stainless pivot pins and sealed-bearing pulleys. The SB00-SSB of 1986 was SunTour's indexed AccuShift version. Disraeli Gears notes that it adopted a sprung upper pivot, was fully riveted and weighed about 200 grams, and that AccuShift lagged well behind Shimano's SIS. 8-speed versions followed around 1990–92. SunTour's 1990 catalog lists the RD-SB00-SSB as AccuShift Plus compatible, with a 26-tooth largest sprocket (23 teeth in full index mode) and 26 teeth of total capacity. The friction-era versions suit freewheels of any spacing. The indexed SB00 versions need matching SunTour AccuShift levers and freewheels to index.
Buying guide
About 95 listings turn up, with most complete units selling for $55–140 delivered. "Superbe Pro" covers two kinds of derailleur: friction-era models (the 3100 and the mid-1980s 5200, often titled RD-5200, with removable pivot pins and sealed-bearing pulleys) that work with any freewheel, and the riveted RD-SB00-SSB AccuShift version in 7- and later 8-speed, which only indexes with SunTour AccuShift levers and freewheels. Many titles name neither, so ask for photos of the pivots before buying; capacity is close-ratio only, 23–26 teeth depending on version. Treat NOS claims at $300 with caution unless the seller shows the box.
