Shimano · ref FD-7400 series (FD-7410 later)
Part of the Shimano Dura-Ace 7400 groupset.
This is the front derailleur that came with the Dura-Ace 7400 groups, built for a two-ring road crank. The 7400 series ran from the first SIS group in 1984 until the 7700 group took over in 1997, and the part number changed along the way. The Japanese Wikipedia history of Dura-Ace notes that the late revision of the group used the number 7410 for only a few parts, including the front derailleur (FD-7410), the crankset, the headset, the seatpost and the pedals. So a period-correct front derailleur for an early 7400 bike carries a different stamp from one for a mid-1990s bike, and sellers often lump them together. Sheldon Brown's Dura-Ace timeline also lists Superglide chainrings from 1990. They have ramps and shaped teeth to help the chain move between rings, which is worth knowing if you are matching a front derailleur to a particular crank. Clamp-on and braze-on versions were both sold. Measure your frame before you bid.
Buying guide
About 93 listings turn up and supply is deep, with most units selling for $35–70 delivered; braze-on versions far outnumber 28.6 mm clamp-ons. Decide first whether your frame has a braze-on tab or needs a clamp, then check that the stamp matches the group you're building: FD-7400 on early groups and FD-7410 on the mid-1990s revision, with FD-7402 and FD-7403 also showing up in titles. Look for a straight, untwisted cage and a strong return spring. Don't pay $130–245 for NOS claims unless the seller shows the box.
