Shimano · ref Dura-Ace 7400-series front hub and freehub · 1984–1996
Part of the Shimano Dura-Ace 7400 groupset.
Dura-Ace 7400 hubs use Shimano's freehub, with the ratchet built into the hub and a cassette of sprockets slid onto it, and the version decides which cassette you can use. Sheldon Brown explains that 6- and 7-speed Dura-Ace freehubs used Uniglide splines. On these, the smallest sprocket screws onto the freehub body instead of sliding on, and Dura-Ace bodies used a smaller thread for it so they could take an 11-tooth top cog, while other Uniglide bodies stopped at 12 teeth. An 8-speed Dura-Ace Uniglide freehub existed in 1989 only and is rare. Hyperglide arrived on Dura-Ace in 1990. Hyperglide sprockets are all splined, with one wide spline, and are held on by a lockring, and earlier 7400 freehubs were not designed for them. Spacing follows the speed count. Sheldon Brown gives 126 mm for 6- and 7-speed road hubs and 130 mm for 8-speed. He also notes that a failed freehub body is normally replaced rather than repaired, and that bodies from the mid-1980s on unbolt from the hub shell. Before you bid, work out which freehub and cassette you have and whether the spacing suits your frame.
Buying guide
About 135 listings turn up, mixing single front hubs, single rear hubs and front-and-rear sets: front hubs mostly run about $35–65 delivered here, single rears about $35–60, and sets about $105 and up. For a rear hub, check which body it has (a Uniglide freehub with a threaded Dura-Ace top cog, a later Hyperglide freehub, or a freewheel thread if the title says so) and the spacing, 126 mm for 6- and 7-speed or 130 mm for 8-speed, against your frame. Match the hole count to your rims, spin the axles for roughness and check the ratchet engages cleanly.
