Mavic · ref Open Pro
The Open Pro is Mavic's narrow box-section 700c clincher rim for road wheels, and one of the rims most often seen on hand-built road wheels from the 1990s onward. It is a double-wall aluminum rim with full eyelets in every spoke hole. Harris Cyclery's rim listing, maintained on Sheldon Brown's site, describes the silver Open Pro as about 19.6 mm wide and roughly 425 g, drilled for Presta valves, stocked in 32- and 36-hole versions and intended for lightweight road use. Because it is a clincher it takes ordinary tires and tubes, which is why it is the usual pick when someone wants a traditional-looking, non-aero rim on a vintage road frame without gluing tubulars. The rim itself does not care about hub spacing, so it laces equally well to older 120 or 126 mm hubs such as Campagnolo Record or Shimano Dura-Ace 7400, provided the hole count matches. The model name is printed on the rim label. The Open Pro name is still in Mavic's catalog today in a tubeless (UST) version, which is a different, later rim, so read the label rather than relying on the name alone. Measure the effective rim diameter (ERD) yourself or use a trusted spoke calculator before ordering spokes.
Buying guide
About 134 listings turn up, mixing single rims and pairs; single 700c rims run about $70–125 delivered here and pairs start around $107. The Open Pro is a 700c clincher that takes ordinary tyres and tubes, and the name is still in Mavic's range as a later tubeless version, so titles alone can't tell you whether a rim is vintage; read the label in the photos. Match the hole count to your hub (28, 32 and 36 all appear here), and check the brake tracks for grooves and the eyelets for cracks. Treat 'NOS' claims as unproven until you see packaging photos.
