Shimano · ref BR-7400 series (single-pivot; dual-pivot from 1991) · 1984–1996
Part of the Shimano Dura-Ace 7400 groupset.
Dura-Ace brake calipers changed during the 7400 era, and the biggest change is not what many listings claim. Sheldon Brown's Dura-Ace timeline puts dual-pivot brakes, along with STI brake-shift levers, on Dura-Ace in 1991. Before that, Dura-Ace 7400 calipers were conventional single-pivot side-pulls. Sheldon Brown credits Altenburger with the dual-pivot idea in the 1960s and says Shimano popularized it in the 1990s, calling its version "Super SLR". SLR (Shimano Linear Response) itself came first, in the late 1980s, starting with the 105 group. It used low-friction pivots and housing plus a light return spring in the brake lever, which let the caliper spring be weaker and the brake feel more responsive. So a listing for "dual-pivot BR-7402" brakes may be wrong about the model, the pivots or both. Check the caliper itself. A dual-pivot caliper has two separate pivot points, one at the centre bolt and one offset to the side. Brake reach and mounting matter as much as the model. Sheldon Brown notes that 39–49 mm is now the standard short reach and that most short-reach calipers are set up for recessed mounting.
Buying guide
About 250 listings turn up, and a working front-and-rear Dura-Ace 7400-series set usually costs $70–110 delivered. Titles mix BR-7400 and BR-7403 numbers; Dura-Ace calipers before 1991 are single-pivot and later ones dual-pivot, so read the stamp and count the pivots rather than trusting the title. Measure your frame's brake reach and check whether it needs recessed-nut mounting, and budget for new pads. Watch for parts-only listings, and read the description before bidding on a very cheap auction that asks you to.
