Shimano · ref BR-6400
Part of the Shimano 600 / Ultegra 6400 groupset.
The BR-6400 is the brake caliper from Shimano's 6400-series 600 group, which Wikipedia's list of Shimano groups dates to 1988 under the nickname "Tricolor". Sheldon Brown notes that the Ultegra name was added to 600 in the early 1990s, so the same family turns up as "600", "600 Tricolor" and "600 Ultegra". The group launched before Shimano's dual-pivot calipers, which Sheldon Brown's Dura-Ace timeline puts at 1991 and which Shimano sold as "Super SLR". So the 1988 caliper is a single-pivot side-pull, and a later dual-pivot 600 caliper is a different part. Shimano's SLR system arrived in the late 1980s, starting with the 105 group. It put a light return spring in the brake lever so the caliper spring could be weaker, which makes for a lighter, more responsive feel. Reach matters on older frames. Sheldon Brown notes that 39–49 mm has become the normal short road reach while 47–57 mm, once standard, is now considered long, and he cites a Shimano 600 caliper in the 47–57 mm range. Measure your frame before buying.
Buying guide
About 172 listings turn up, and a front-and-rear pair of 600 Tricolor calipers usually costs $35–55 delivered. Titles mix BR-6400 and BR-6403 numbers, so read the number stamped on the arm; the 1988 BR-6400 is a single-pivot caliper, so a listing calling it dual-pivot is either wrong or a later part. Measure your frame's brake reach and check whether it needs recessed-nut mounting, since several titles quote 49 mm without saying more. Check the arms move freely without side play, and budget for new pads.
