Brooks England · ref B17 (Standard; also Champion Narrow, Special, Sprinter variants) · 1890s – present
The B17 is Brooks's medium-width leather saddle. Brooks says it was first introduced in the 1890s and calls it its best-selling model for over a century. It is a vegetable-tanned leather top stretched over a steel frame and riveted at the nose and the rear cantle, with a tension nut under the nose that pulls the leather taut. The current B17 Standard is listed at 175 mm wide and 275 mm long with tubular steel rivets and single rails that fit an ordinary seatpost. Vintage examples come in several variants: Velobase records a B17 Champion Narrow about 150 mm wide, a B17 Champion Special with large copper rivets and a chamfered skirt edge, a Champion Sprinter, and a Lightweight on cast-aluminum rails. Sheldon Brown described the B17 as a medium-width saddle that generally suits sport riders; the narrower Team Professional and the thick-leather Professional are separate Brooks models, not B17 versions. A leather saddle shapes itself to its rider, which is both the appeal and the risk of buying one used: a well-kept saddle can feel settled from the first ride, while an overstretched, cracked or dried-out one cannot be brought back.
Buying guide
About 80 listings turn up, and because the B17 is still made, new current-production saddles at about $148–155 sit alongside vintage ones; most run $110–200 delivered. The "Standard Classic" listings in several colours at $147.90 look like current stock despite "vintage" in the title, while Champion Narrow and other older variants are vintage, so check which you are buying. On a used saddle, ask for photos of the top, both sides and the underside, and avoid a flared skirt, cracked or dried-out leather, or a tension nut wound right in. The numbered titanium-rail Sprinter at $370 is priced as a collector piece.
