Cinelli Unicanitor saddle
The Unicanitor is the early plastic-based racing saddle sold under the Cinelli name. Classic Rendezvous credits the Unica-Nitor plastic saddle to Tommaso Nieddu of Turin, founder of the Vittoria derailleur company, and calls it the first nylon saddle to gain popularity with professional riders at a time when nearly every racing saddle was thick stretched leather; Cinelli's timeline dates its introduction to 1959, while another Classic Rendezvous history says it was designed in 1962. It was later co-branded as Cinelli. The design is a nylon shell on steel rails, sold bare or covered: Classic Rendezvous lists uncovered black models 50 and 55 (the 55 perforated), leather-covered Campione del Mondo models 65 and 70 (the 70 quilted), and Tour de France model 75 versions in chamois or buffalo leather, and Velobase shows a padded buffalo-hide number 3 and a suede number 2. Recorded weights run from about 416 to 469 g, with a width of about 150 mm and standard 42 mm rail spacing. Unlike a Brooks it needs no breaking in or tensioning, but the padding is minimal, and a worn or torn cover cannot be tightened back into shape.
