Cinelli · ref 64 Giro d'Italia (later sleeves marked 64-38 to 64-44) · 1967 – 1990s
The Giro d'Italia is Cinelli's model 64 drop bar, the shallower of Cinelli's two classic road bends; the deeper model 66 was sold as the Campione del Mondo. Classic Rendezvous dates Cinelli's aluminum bars to 1963–64, and Velobase documents the 64 from 1967 into the 1990s. The earliest bars are polished rather than anodized, with the model name on both sleeves and 64 stamped on the bar ends. 1970s bars are satin-anodized, with the Cinelli crest on the left sleeve and Giro D'Italia on the right; early ones have three separate knurled rings at the center, later ones a single knurled band. From the early 1980s the left sleeve reads Cinelli 64- followed by the width, for example 64-40, and some bars have a groove pressed into the front for aero brake cables. Velobase records widths of 38, 40, 42 and 44 cm. The center section is 26.4 mm on most vintage bars, matching the Cinelli 1A stem, but a 1990s version uses 26.0 mm, in line with Sheldon Brown's note that Cinelli moved from 26.4 to 26.0 mm. The shallow bend gives an easy reach to the drops, which suits riders who find deep traditional bars a stretch.
Buying guide
About 79 listings turn up, and most Giro d'Italia bars sell for $65–120 delivered. Check the sleeve marking for 64 (the Giro bend) rather than 66 (the deeper Campione del Mondo), and confirm the center clamp: most vintage bars are 26.4 mm to match a Cinelli 1A stem, while a 1990s version is 26.0 mm. Measure width yourself rather than trusting the listing, and ask for photos with the tape off, since corrosion and creases at the clamp and bends are what end an old alloy bar. Watch shipping: two bars here carry $84 of it, which pushes them well over the band.
