Cinelli · ref 1A (Mod. 1/A) · 1963 – 1990s
The 1A is Cinelli's forged aluminum-alloy quill stem; the A stands for aluminum. Cinelli's timeline says it was shown at a trade show at the time of the 1960 Rome Olympics, with production starting in 1963, while a separate Classic Rendezvous parts page gives 1968 for the Mod. 1/A, so treat early dates with care. The bar is held by a single binder bolt under the clamp and the quill by a conical expander. Two details help date one. Early stems used a 7 mm hex expander bolt and a 12 mm bar-clamp nut, both changed to 6 mm hex fittings in the early-to-mid 1970s (Classic Rendezvous gives both 1972 and 1975). The top logo reads Cinelli Milano on earlier stems and shows the winged Flying C on later ones, the logo Cinelli adopted in 1978. The bar clamp is the key fit point: most 1A stems take Cinelli's 26.4 mm bar size, but Velobase notes production switched to 26.0 mm before the model ended, and Sheldon Brown dates Cinelli's change to 26.0 mm to 1998. Velobase lists extensions from 70 to 140 mm and notes some stems were made for 22.0 mm French steerers. The 1R Record stem of 1973, with a hidden binder bolt, is a different model.
Buying guide
About 216 listings turn up, and most used 1A stems sell for $50–110 delivered; some listings are new stock, such as benscycle's, at about $112–125, which is a fair choice if you just want a correct stem to ride. The bar clamp matters most: most 1A stems take Cinelli's 26.4 mm bar, later production is 26.0 mm, and a 26.4 mm Cinelli bar will not go into a 26.0 mm stem, so match the clamp to your bars. Confirm a 22.2 mm quill unless your frame is French, check for cracks around the binder bolt and quill slot, and pick the extension length carefully, since a quill stem can't be adjusted for reach.
