Campagnolo · ref 2040 (standard reach); 2040/1 (short reach) · 1968–1987
Part of the Campagnolo Nuovo Record groupset.
Campagnolo's Record side-pull brakes arrived in 1968, and these single-pivot calipers became the Nuovo Record brakes. Velobase catalogues the set as 2040 in standard reach, with a short-reach 2040/1 from the mid 1970s. There are clear dating clues. Classic Rendezvous says the first-year calipers had no lettering on the arms, with CAMPAGNOLO lettering added in 1969 or 1970. In 1978, US Consumer Product Safety Commission rules led Campagnolo to change the quick-release lever to a cupped, domed shape and to dip the tips of the shoe wheel guides in black plastic. Flat quick-release levers and bare guides therefore point to pre-1978 brakes. Velobase notes the original releases were nutted, with recessed-mount variations offered later. The matching Nuovo Record lever is the 2030, with an undrilled blade; Super Record levers are drilled. By modern standards a single-pivot side-pull is soft, but in good order with fresh pads these brakes work well on the bikes they came on.
Buying guide
About 276 listings turn up, mixing pairs, single calipers and Super Record sets, and most Nuovo Record pairs run $150–300 delivered. Measure your frame's reach first and buy the standard 2040 or short-reach 2040/1 to suit, and match nutted or recessed mounting to your fork and brake bridge. Flat quick-release levers and bare wheel guides mean pre-1978 brakes, while cupped levers and black-tipped guides mean 1978 or later, so check those before matching a group. Some titles say "Brake" singular, so confirm you're getting a front and rear pair, and plan on new pads.
