Campagnolo · ref 1049/A Strada, 144 mm BCD · 1974–1987
Part of the Campagnolo Super Record (1st gen) groupset.
Velobase lists a 1049/A Strada crankset under Super Record from 1974 to 1987: 144 mm bolt circle, fluted arms and spider, 9/16 x 20 pedal threads and lengths from 165 to 180 mm. The back of the arm carries a 'C' in a diamond, the length, the word Strada and a production date code. Collectors disagree about whether a separately designed Super Record crank existed at all; one Velobase entry carries a reader's note to that effect. In practice the crank is the Record Strada pattern, so judge it on its condition and date codes rather than on the name in the listing. Where the Super Record group differed was the bottom bracket. Velobase and Classic Rendezvous describe a true Super Record BB as a titanium spindle in aluminium cups; Velobase notes the first-generation spindle was hollow and the second solid. Late versions catalogued in the late 1980s and early 1990s dropped the fluted arm and have an engraved or etched logo. Dating works the same way as on the Nuovo Record crank: the last digit of the year sits in a diamond through the 1970s; for the early 1980s Classic Rendezvous describes the digit in a circle while the Vélo-Rétro timeline describes a two-digit code in a square from 1981, so read the code alongside the other dating clues.
Buying guide
About 470 listings turn up, including modern Super Record cranks; vintage fluted Strada cranks mostly sell for $180–360 delivered. Collectors disagree on whether a separately designed Super Record crank existed, and in practice it is the Record Strada pattern with a 144 mm bolt circle and a 41-tooth minimum inner ring, so judge it on condition and date codes rather than the name. The real Super Record difference was the bottom bracket (titanium spindle, aluminium cups), so only pay extra if that is included. Read the date codes on both arms, check the extractor and pedal threads, and note that plain, unfluted arms belong to the later versions.
