Campagnolo · ref 4001 · 1973–1988
Part of the Campagnolo Super Record (1st gen) groupset.
The Super Record 4001 arrived in 1973 as the lighter, dressier sibling of the Nuovo Record. Classic Rendezvous describes the first generation as essentially a Nuovo Record with titanium top and bottom pivot bolts and black-anodised body parts. Disraeli Gears goes further: the knuckles and the aluminium are the same as the Nuovo Record, and the real changes were the titanium used for the two large Allen bolts and a bigger flange on the pulley cage to push the chain onto the low gears. Later versions moved from a logo cast into a curved outer plate to a logo painted on a flat plate, and later still to an 'improved' cage shape. The b-knuckle stamp dates it roughly: 'PATENT-73' to 'PATENT-79' through the 1970s, 'PAT.80' to 'PAT.84' for 1980–84, and no marking from 1985. The titanium bolts are not a perfect test, because Disraeli Gears shows a 1978 example with aluminium bolts. Capacity is close to the Nuovo Record's, and like it, it shifts by friction only.
Buying guide
About 373 listings turn up, which includes modern Super Record parts; vintage 4001 derailleurs mostly sell for $150–290 delivered. The Super Record shares its knuckles and aluminium with the Nuovo Record and differs mainly in the titanium pivot bolts, black-anodised parts and cage flange, so check the photos for those rather than trusting the title. Date it from the b-knuckle stamp ('PATENT-73' to 'PATENT-79', then 'PAT.80' to 'PAT.84', no marking from 1985) and check it agrees with the plate style. Titanium bolts are not a perfect test, since a 1978 example with aluminium bolts is documented, so don't pay a large premium for 'titanium bolts' in a title alone.

Heads-up: priced high
A 1978 unit at about $648 delivered from Japan, three times the median; titanium bolts alone don't justify it.
