Campagnolo · ref 1020/A · 1966–1987
Part of the Campagnolo Nuovo Record groupset.
The Nuovo Record 1020/A is the aluminium parallelogram rear derailleur Campagnolo introduced around 1966, and Disraeli Gears credits it with dominating road racing for some 16 years. You can roughly date one from the stamp on top of the b-knuckle (the upper body that bolts to the frame): 'PATENT CAMPAGNOLO' on 1966–67 units, 'PATENT' for 1968–69, 'PATENT-70' through 'PATENT-79' year by year in the 1970s, 'PAT.80' to 'PAT.84' for 1980–84, 'PAT.11' in 1985 only, and no writing at all on 1986–87 examples. Smaller details move with the years too: the 1967 version has 9-tooth pulleys, later ones 10-tooth, and the pulleys run bronze-on-bronze rather than on ball bearings. Capacity is modest. The commonly quoted limits are a 26-tooth largest cog and 26 teeth of total capacity, which suits close-ratio racing freewheels rather than wide touring gears. Disraeli Gears also notes it dislikes low gears and is not very precise on the smallest cogs. It is a friction-only derailleur, made for 5- and 6-speed freewheels and down-tube levers of the same era.
Buying guide
About 520 listings turn up for this search, though that count sweeps in other Campagnolo derailleurs and parts. Most complete 1020/A derailleurs sell for $60–170 delivered, and honest 1970s and early-1980s examples are easy to find at $50–75. Read the b-knuckle stamp to date it ('PATENT-70' to 'PATENT-79' through the 1970s, 'PAT.80' to 'PAT.84' for 1980–84), check the spring bolt for cross-threading and ask about pulley play, since the pulleys run on bronze bushings. It is friction only and tops out around a 26-tooth largest cog, and a 'first version 1967' claim needs photos of the 'PATENT CAMPAGNOLO' stamp and 9-tooth pulleys before it is worth a premium.
