Power Ratchet is SunTour's answer to a basic problem with friction shifters. With an ordinary friction lever, a shift to a larger cog means fighting both the lever friction and the derailleur spring, while a shift the other way gets help from the spring, so the two directions feel very different. Sheldon Brown explains that SunTour's Power Ratchet releases the friction when the lever is pulled back, so you only work against the spring and both directions feel balanced. The ratchet gives a fine "micro-click" feel, but it is not indexed: you still set each gear by feel, so it works with any derailleur and any freewheel spacing. Sheldon Brown's glossary lists Power Ratchet levers among SunTour's innovations, and his SunTour history says SunTour's Sprint group of 1986 used "Power Shift" ratchet levers. Later Power AccuShift levers, like those in SunTour's Sprint 9000 leaflet, add a selector ring with RE and UL index settings for SunTour freewheels plus a P setting for non-indexed ratchet shifting. A listing titled "power shifters" may be either type, so check whether the levers have an index selector.
